We are entering fire season and it’s so important to be aware! Fire Prevention Week, sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association, is coming up, from October 7-13th! We should all Look, Listen, Learn and Be Aware!
As a homeowner, I am much more careful about preventing fires nowadays. It would be such a tragedy if a fire were to burn down my cozy little house that I've spent so much time redecorating! Also, if a fire happened when I wasn't at home, my precious kitties’ lives could be in danger!
Why is fire safety important?
It's important for all of us to educate ourselves about the possible fire hazards that exist within our homes. For example, I didn't know that most fire deaths in the United States occur at home! Fires burn faster than ever before. For example, after your smoke alarm goes off, you might only have 2-3 minutes to evacuate from your home. That thought terrifies me. That definitely does not seem like enough time for me to rescue my two kitties, especially since they tend to hide in super hard-to- reach places when they are scared.
As a first-time homeowner, I want to be as aware as possible about everything that I can do to protect my home and my precious kitties against fire. There was actually a fire in the building behind me a year ago, so I've experienced the incredible and dangerous power of fire, second-hand.
I am going to share about tips and tricks on how to keep your home safe while cooking. One major problem I've had in the past is turning on the gas on the stove and leaving it on. One time I returned home, and I had left it on all day! These days, I double and triple check to make sure that the stove is completely turned off after I have finished cooking. I was so scared to learn that cooking is the #1 cause of home fires, with the majority of deaths for 15 to 34 year olds occurring between 3am to 7am.
Here are some tips on how to prevent fires while cooking:
Avoid cooking if you are sleepy and/or tipsy from alcohol
Pay attention! Avoid using your phone or checking social media while cooking.
Use a timer to keep you aware of your cooking.
Do not leave home when simmering, baking, or roasting, and make sure to check on your cooking regularly.
Do not leave your cooking unattended, as it’s the #1 cause of cooking fires! Do not leave the kitchen when you are in the middle of cooking. If you must leave, make sure to turn off the stove.
A lid is a great resource for putting out fires, so make sure to keep one nearby while you are cooking. Keep your stovetop safe!
Don't keep flammable items near the flame. This includes anything wooden, cloth, paper, or fabric.
If you're forgetful like me, make sure to bring a reminder with you when you leave the kitchen, perhaps an oven mitt or a kitchen utensil!
If you have long hair, put it back in a ponytail to prevent hair from accidentally catching on fire.
Make sure to check on your cooking regularly
